- Acute Pancreatitis
• The main symptom is abdominal pain in upper left side or mid belly (abdomen)
• Other Common Symptoms: Fever, Nausea, Vomiting, Sweating, Back pain, and Shoulder pain.
• Symptoms often worsen after eating/drinking
• CAN BE LIFE THREATENING
- Hemorrhagic or Necrotizing Pancreatitis
• Severe acute pancreatitis is usually known as acute necrotizing pancreatitis. This is the outcome of pancreatic glandular necrosis (death of cells).
• In severe cases there may be tissue damage, bleeding, and infection.
• The need for hospitalization, and surgery associated with acute pancreatitis are considerably higher when necrosis is present
• CAN BE LIFE THREATENING
- Blood Tests for Pancreatitis
• Laboratory: Lipase and Amylase
• Amylase and Lipase are digestive enzymes made by the pancreas. An enzyme is a protein that accelerates a biochemical reaction. Use of both enzymes increases diagnostic sensitivity and specificity to around 90%. Acute pancreatitis is highly likely when the plasma amylase is increased to more than twofold normal and lipase is increased more than fivefold normal.
