Vioxx
Vioxx (rofecoxib) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that was approved by the FDA in May 1999 for the relief of the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis, for the management of acute pain in adults, and for the treatment of menstrual symptoms. Vioxx was also later approved for the relief of the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis in adults and children. The FDA recalled Vioxx in September 2004 after it was discovered that it more than tripled the risk of heart attacks for patients who used it. Click here for more information.

Fosamax
Fosomax was approved by the FDA in September 1995 for treatment of osteoporosis. It was prescribed primarily for post-menopausal women. In 2001, dentists and oral surgeons began to report jaw necrosis. This was not at that time warned about in the label. In May of 2004 The Journal of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery published an article supporting the association between Fosomax and osteonecrosis of the jaw. Merck did not warn of this risk until July of 2005.
